KRUK in the media: underfunding of higher education is a security threat.
The refusal of higher education institutions to sign administrative contracts signals that we are starting to reach the threshold of a new crisis. One that also puts security at risk in the long run.
Tõnis Saarts has recently said that the underfunding of higher education is not a hot enough topic for politicians and perhaps the wider public at least now. This is surprising because higher education in Estonian should also be seen as an important deterrent against hostile forces. For example, increasingly rapidly developing and complex military technology will inevitably require an increase in human capacity to use advanced equipment. The need for an educated skilled workforce has also been demonstrated, rather painfully, by the ongoing coronavirus crisis.
